Proofreading is the final step before you publish or print.
As your proofreader, I perform an exacting proofread on your content, catching errors that may have been missed in previous passes. Services include:
- Grammar
- Spelling

- Formatting issues

- Capitalization

- Double words (the the)
Proofreading does not involve rewriting, rewording, or rephrasing.
Copyediting ensures the clarity, consistency, and flow of your message.
As your copyeditor, I strengthen your message while maintaining your voice and style. Services include:
- Grammar
- Spelling
- Punctuation
- Word usage
- Basic fact checking
- Rewrite/restructure awkward phrases/sentences
- Errors in syntax and word choice
- Passive verbs
- Repetition, jargon, and wordiness eliminated
- Maintain your voice and style
I’ll follow the style manual of your choice; if you have no preference, then I’ll use The Chicago Manual of Style.
I also offer transcript editing and editing for writers whose second language is English.
How Does It Work?
Initial discussion: Tell me about your project: the type of project, length or word count, type of service, and turnaround time.
Free sample: Send a short sample of your work (500 words) to lesley@thewritepolish.com so I can assess what level of editing you’ll need.
Proposal: When I return your sample edit, I’ll provide an estimate of time and cost.
Letter of agreement: After we agree to work together, I’ll send a letter of agreement that we both sign.
First invoice: I’ll issue you an invoice for a deposit, which can vary between 25-50% of the total project cost. Once you pay the first invoice, you send me the document.
Editing: I’ll edit with Word Track Changes enabled, so you’ll be able to see the changes I’ve made. I have a simple guide to Track Changes if you’re not familiar with it.
You review: I return the edited document for your review. You can accept, reject, discuss changes, and/or provide updated content.
I review: If you make any changes to the original text, I’ll review to ensure no new errors were introduced.
Delivery of files: I’ll return the Track Changes version and a clean version.
Final invoice: At the end of the project, I’ll invoice you for the remainder of the fee.
Rates
Rates vary according to size, type of work required, and turnaround time. I’ll give you a customized quote based on a free sample edit of your work.
As a member of the Editorial Freelancers Association, I set my rates within industry standard guidelines.
